In April 2000, Anne took on the role of Mitzi Matters, a cocktail waitress working at an Atlantic City showbar. She was Rose's best friend and instantly won the hearts of As The World Turns fans everywhere. In August 2001, Anne returned to the show and Mitzi became a fan favorite. Her latest stint began on February 10, 2003, and Mitzi will be working with Rose at her new hair salon.
Mitzi:: Nothing's like having Rose here, I know. But I don't think Holden’s all too choked up with me hangin' around here. Oh, and I should tell you -- he knows I didn't give Rose's stuff away. He's not happy.
Lily: I'll talk to him.
Mitzi:: I mean, I don't blame the guy, you know? Things got pretty ugly between me and Rose at the end. Back in Atlantic City, we didn't even know what it was to fight. Once she opened the Roller Palace -- I don't know. It got tense. Um, speakin' of the Roller Palace -- every time I see that place empty, it's like seein' Rose's dream die, too. You know? It's sad.
Lily: I feel the same way.
Mitzi:: Maybe it doesn't have to be that way. You know? I could keep the place open for you, you know? Like a tribute to Rose. I know. It's way too early. I just thought, since you were here, maybe we could talk about it --
Lily: I'll think about it. I will -- I --I -- I gotta get ready for Paul’s arraignment.
Mitzi:: Oh. You want me to come with?
Lily: No, no, no. It's okay. Really.
Mitzi:: You sure?
Lily: Yeah.
Mitzi:: I don't mind.
Lily: No, no, no. It's okay. And, um -- we're gonna talk about the Roller Palace. I promise.
Mitzi:: I'd like that.
Lily: Okay, I'll see you soon.
Mitzi:: Yes, you will.
[Knock on door]
Mitzi:: Now what? I'm glad that you decided to -- what are you doin' here?
Carly: I ain't the welcome wagon.
Mitzi:: Beat it.
Carly: Make me.
Mitzi:: Carly, I don't want any problems, okay? I'm just trying to get my life back together. Maybe bein' here and feelin' close to Rose helps. If Lily doesn't have a problem with it, why do you?
Carly: Lily is a generous person. Generous people can get taken advantage of.
Mitzi:: Not by me.
Carly: This "best friend in mourning" act, it's -- it's really wonderful. I have to hand it to you, top notch.
Mitzi:: Hello. They caught the killer. The paper said Paul Ryan’s got the goods.
Carly: You read the paper?
Mitzi:: Yeah. And I read People, too. Especially jealous housewives who can't get their career out of first gear. They have too much time on their hands. They start imagining all kinds of crazy things.
Carly: Oh, really? Tell me something, Mitzi:, am I imagining this?
Mitzi:: What are you doing?
Carly: Does it smell familiar to you?
Mitzi:: Yeah, "Midnight Melody."
Carly: Emily and I smelled this perfume, right here, on the day of R+ose's murder.
Mitzi:: So Rose and I had the same taste in perfume. So what?
Carly: So maybe you started off as an embezzler and graduated to murderer. You never did explain why you took a train back to Oakdale on the day of Rose's death.
Mitzi:: I wouldn't hurt a hair on Rose's head. And I can't even stand to hear you say things like that!
Carly: Oh, poor Mitzi:, it's so hard to get away with murder these days, isn't it?
Mitzi:: I just don't get it. How's a nice guy like Jack wind up with a witch like you?
Carly: Jack's been a little too nice when it comes to you. But then, he's always had a soft spot for charity cases.
Mitzi:: Really? Yours or mine?
Carly: Make yourself at home here while it lasts. But if I have my way, it won't be long. And trust me, Mitzi:. I always get my way.
Mitzi:: Not this time. You don't walk away from me, Carly Snyder, not until I tell you to.
Carly: I just wish jack could see you now. Sweet little innocent Mitzi: who wouldn't hurt a fly.
Mitzi:: You push, I push back.
Carly: Oh. And just how far did you push Rose back?
Mitzi:: I didn't!
Carly: You stole from her. You lied to her. And you were in town on the day she was murdered.
Mitzi:: You know, you're sounding like my old friend, Angie Russ
Carly: Who's that?
Mitzi:: She was this girl in the kick line back in AC. Use to watch all those crime shows on TV. Anytime anything shady happened at the casino, she was the first one to play detective and point fingers.
Carly: This is very riveting, but really I'm not all that interested in some friend of yours I don't even know.
Mitzi:: Oh, well, see, that's the thing. We're not really friends anymore. Kinda lost touch after the accident. Poor thing can't even dance now. So why don't you go home? You got a nice setup. Keep it that way.
January 2, 2004
Mitzi:: I always loved Rose in this dress. I hope you don't mind me wearin' it. I mean, they snatched me outta A.C. So fast, I didn't have time to pack.
Lily: Don't worry about it. You know, if you want to send for your things in Atlantic City to bring them here, I'll pay for that.
Mitzi:: Really?
Lily: Sure, yeah. Sure.
Mitzi:: That'd be great. I mean, I was kinda thinkin' about stickin' around for a little while longer. As a matter of fact, I went by the Roller Palace today and --
Lily: Oh, here it is. This is the one. Here's the one I was looking for.
Mitzi:: You're -- you're Lily today, right?
Lily: Yeah. I'm me. I just like wearing Rose's things. It just makes me -- I smell her perfume, it makes me feel closer to her.
Mitzi:: Kinda like me in this dress. Your husband, he's a little freaked out about you holdin' on to Rose's stuff, you know? He even asked me to keep an eye on you.
Lily: Can I blame him? What I've been going through is absolute torture on him.
Mitzi:: You're okay, now, right?
Lily: Oh, I'm not gonna walk into the pond again, if that's what you're saying. I'm gonna go home, and I'll talk to Holden, and I'll tell him that he has nothing to worry about.
Mitzi:: Oh -- can I talk to you about something first?
Lily: Sure.
[Knock on door]
Holden: Mitzi:! It's Holden. Lily in there?
[Knock on door]
Lily: I'm here. See that. I was just about to go home.
Mitzi:: That's true. She was just leaving, God as my witness.
Holden: Lily, the kids keep asking for you.
Lily: I'm leaving. I'm coming. Right now. Oh, I'll talk to you later?
Mitzi:: Oh, uh, hope so.
Lily: Okay.
Mitzi:: Damn. I almost had her.
Holden: Lily -- I'm home. Sol said to say, "hello" and that he misses you very much. Where's Lily?
Mitzi:: Um, I don't know. Something came up; she called me to watch the kids.
Holden: She called you?
Mitzi:: You know, you come from a big family like me; you're used to watching kids at a moment's notice. And, uh, I was happy to do her a favor. But, now you're here, so I'll just skedaddle.
Holden: Where are the kids?
Mitzi:: Um, Luke’s in the family room working a puzzle and Natalie and Faith are upstairs napping.
Holden: What's your game, Mitzi:?
Mitzi:: Excuse me?
Holden: I asked you to make sure that Rose's things were picked up and taken to the thrift shop at the church, and here you are wearing one of Rose's dresses. And this morning I saw Lily was wearing a scarf that I know I packed in a box.
Mitzi:: Well, you know, I needed to borrow a dress. I mean, all my stuff is in Jersey.
Holden: Mitzi:, Mitzi:, I went to see if the pickup was made. And it wasn’t. You're lying to me. Why?
Mitzi:: So Lily just wants to wear some of Rose's stuff. I mean, what is the big deal?
Holden: The big deal is that she's very fragile right now. Pulling out little reminders of Rose and parading around in them is not good for her. In fact, it could be very damaging.
Mitzi:: Listen, she just wants to find a way so that Rose won't seem so far away, all right? I get that, don't you? I mean, Lily and I were Rose's two closest friends in the whole world and we both miss her like the dickens.
Holden: Cut the crap. You may have Lily fooled, you may even have Jack fooled, but you do not fool me.
Mitzi:: I am not trying to fool anybody.
Holden: Bull! You're an opportunist and an embezzler and I don't know why you're here, but you did come back here for a reason.
Mitzi:: I just need a place to stay until I can get back on my feet. Honest.
Holden: Well, you better do it fast. Because if you think I'm going to let you use my wife like you used her sister, think again. I'm going to be watching you, Mitzi:.
Mitzi:: Go ahead.
January 1, 2004
Mitzi:: I'm on the board as a suspect -- it just makes me sick to my stomach, that they could think that.
Lily: I don't think that. And I don't want you to worry. That's why I called you. I'd like you to take your things from the hotel and move back into Cal’s. 'Cause Rose thought of you as family. And family takes care of family. Look at me. It's okay. Look, look. You're going to help me make sure that Rose isn't forgotten.
Holden: Everything okay in here?
Lily: Yeah. Everything's okay. Look, don't let anything happen to Rose's things. Promise me.
Holden: Lily, you need to try and get some rest.
Mitzi:: Yeah. Whatever Lily wants.
Lily: Holden, could you help Mitzi: move her things back to Cal’s?
Holden: Yeah. Sure thing.
Mitzi:: You two -- I'm never gonna forget how kind you are. You're the greatest.
Mitzi:: That went better than I thought.
Mitzi:: Those are Rose's things?
Holden: A man from the church is comin' by. He's gonna pick all this stuff up and take it over to the thrift shop. Make sure he takes everything.
Lily: Don't let anything happen to rose's things. Promise me.
Holden: Mitzi:? Did you hear me? It's important. I want all this stuff gone before Lily comes home.
Mitzi:: Yeah, I heard you. But I wasn't listening.
Mitzi:: Just that -- to tell you the truth, Lil, when I got here? He'd packed up all of Rose's stuff. He was trying to send it to the church.
Lily: No! He can't --
Mitzi:: No, no, don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. I unpacked everything, and I hid it all in my room. So you can look at Rose's things anytime you want.
Mitzi: (to herself): Mitzi:'s Roller Palace. It's got a nice ring to it.
