Where does Mitzi get that outrageous wardrobe she wears on As the World Turns? Well I went to actress Anne Sayre's New Jersey home to find out and discovered that she is incredibly creative and also has an amazing sense of style. IN ANNE'S KITCHEN PB: Your kitchen is fabulous. You have a definite creative flair. Tell me about this kitchen. Anne: I've been called Retro Girl, and I think accurately. I don't know, I'm attracted to the style of different periods, mostly to the 40's and 40's and 50s. For the kitchen, you can't beat the 50's. I think there's something about this kind of style that's nurturing to people. And I want people when they come to my house, I want them to feel like there's food, there's warmth, like they're at their Grandma's. PB: Well the kitchen is fabulous, but I can't wait any longer. I've got to see your closet. Anne: OK. Let's go. IN ANNE'S CLOSET PB: Here we are in Anne/Mitzi's closet. Where do we start? Look at these great boas! Anne: Different boas, lots of hats. (Anne tries on a hat). PB: So what's an outfit in here that's one of Mitzi's favorites? Anne: Let's see. Mitzi has a retro style. She's very current, but it's always sort of a nod to the influences of the past. Not unlike somebody I know (laughing). That's interesting. PB: Then Anne showed me several of her favorite Mitzi outfits. (They show Anne modeling several outfits). Anne: This outfit was the outfit I wore when Rose called from Oakdale. I was in Atlantic City at the casino. And you only saw it from the chest up cause I was on the phone. (They show the clip where Anne is wearing that outfit). Anne: This is what I just happened to be lounging around the house in when Jack unexpectedly shows up in the middle of a thunderstorm because he thinks he saw James Stenbeck. ANNE AND PEGGY WALKING BY THE HUDSON RIVER PB: Later, Anne and I took advantage of a really warm winter afternoon as the walked along the Hudson River. (Anne is wearing her leopard skin coat). Now who would you say is more wild in terms of their fashion, you or Mitzi? PB: I think Mitzi's more wild as far as like she's more accessorized and uh, she's a little over the top. But I'm pretty wild. I'm always the most overdressed girl in the room. I think it has to do with that retro thing. You know that's just me, that's just who I am. PB: Have you always been into the retro 50's, 60's look? PB: Definitely. My biggest role model is Vivien Leigh, who played Scarlett. I emulated her from the very first day I was born. In the second grade, I used to sign my papers Vivien Leigh or Scarlett O'Hara and my teacher would say 'You're not Scarlett, you have to write Anne on your paper. And I would be like 'I'm gonna be an actress someday'. (Clip) PB: If you were to say, I don't know, Mitzi-fy someone, make me look a little more like Mitzi. PB: I would love to make you into Mitzi. PB: What would you do? PB: (In Mitzi's voice) Well, your hair would have to be bigger. PB: OK PB: Cause you know.. PB: It's a little flat. Anne: Mousey, for Mitzi. It's all about eye makeup. Lip color that matches your clothes. It's totally all about attitude. You can't not have 'tude when you're dressed up like that. Think drag queen. Work it girl. Vogue! LATER PB: Anne told me that 4 out of 5 outfits that Mitzi wears comes straight from her closet. And many of those clothes she buys right here at Laundry by Shelly Siegel in New York's trendy SoHo. |
